Safety Items Every Car Needs For Spring Mountain Travel

If you are getting ready to head out to the mountains for a spring hike with your family, then there are many safety items you need to place into your car's trunk before leaving home. Since spring season travel in the mountains can lead you through a wide variety of different terrains and weather phenomena, it is vital that you are prepared to handle any emergency situations that might arise. Help is often a long ways away when you are in the mountains and you may need to wait hours for a tow truck for roadside assistance, so preparing for emergencies can actually save your life. To this end, stock each of these items in your car's trunk before heading to the wilderness this spring:

A Blanket for Each Traveler

Since the weather in the spring is very unpredictable up higher in elevation, you should always travel with a blanket for each member of your family. Even on days where the temperatures are warm enough for swimming during the day, the nights can be well below freezing as soon as the sun goes down.

Food and Water

If you take a turn down the wrong dirt road in the wilderness and your car breaks down, then you might be stuck for days or even a week before someone finds your vehicle. For this reason, you should always carry an ample supply of food and water. Take along foods that do not need to be cooked, and many gallons of drinking water.

Tire Chains

Since you may encounter snow along your drive in the mountains in spring, you should always carry tire chains that fit your car. You should practice putting them on at home to ensure that you know how to use them if it becomes necessary to do so. Tire chains can be the difference between getting your family back out to a plowed road or spending some cold days stuck in the snow.

Extra Fluids for Your Vehicle

In addition to the above, you should always take along extra bottles of the following fluids for your car:

• motor oil

• transmission fluid

• windshield wiper fluid

Simple and inexpensive things like an extra bottle of motor oil or transmission fluid ensure that you can keep driving with a small leak without seriously damaging your vehicle. Windshield wiper fluid is essential if you get stuck driving in a storm where a lot of mud is being kicked up onto your car's windshield.
