Undergo Intensive Training

Most towing companies require tow truck drivers to undergo intensive training before they begin working. This intensive training is usually conducted at an academy in-person where tow truck drivers learn how to properly hook up and tow a wide variety of vehicles under a variety of different situations. Additionally, most tow truck drivers undergo an internship period where they ride with another tow truck driver and learn how to make decisions while on the road.

Earn Advanced Certification

Next, many tow companies require their drivers to earn advanced certifications as well. The national licensing body for tow truck drivers is the Towing and Recovery Association of America; they have a test that drivers have to take before they are able to earn a certification through them.

In order to maintain the certification, refresher courses are necessary in order to learn any new techniques on the trade. Refreshers courses are also a great opportunity to review skills that you may not have used on a regular basis.

Most towing companies employ tow truck drivers who are skilled at more than just towing a vehicle. They also hire tow truck drivers who are skilled locksmiths as well who have undergone locksmith training. This locksmith training focuses on how to unlock vehicles using unlocking tools that will not damage your vehicle. When your get locked in your vehicle, you want someone who has experience and training to unlock your vehicle. This is necessary in order to avoid damaging the wires and internal mechanisms of the locking system on your vehicle. Modern locking mechanisms are more complex than older vehicle locks, and more needs to be taken.

Mechanical Training

Additionally, many tow truck drivers have some basic mechanical training as well. This training allows them to do perform such tasks such as replace a damaged tire on your vehicle, change out a damaged battery, and jump start your vehicle.
