Holiday Weekend Travel Tips

Rose Perkins

If you are going to be traveling with your family on a holiday weekend, then you want to be prepared for many possibilities. The information below is going to educate you on what some of the things you want to do to prepare for your holiday trip involve.

Plan the time of day you leave wisely

It's a bad idea to take off for your holiday trip in the later part of the day. Many others will also be taking off later in the day due to leaving after they get off of work. If you can leave around daybreak, then you can get a good number of hours driving behind you without dealing with as much traffic. Less traffic means a smoother trip and less wasted fuel from stopping and going during traffic jams. During holidays landing in hotter months, you increase your risk of overheating when you leave later in the day.

There is one time when you may want to put off leaving until the middle of the day and this is if you are driving in an area where the roads can be icy and snowy. In this case, you will want to wait until the sun comes out to melt some of that ice and until the salt trucks and plows have had a chance to travel the roadways you will be on.

Pack for anything

There are some things you should always have with you when you are traveling far. Bring water, non-perishable food like beef jerky, flashlights, flares, a lighter or matches and a basic tool box.

When you are packing the car, consider the different regions you will be traveling in, as well as the time of year, and pack accordingly. If you will go through the sparse desert during warmer months, add more water bottles. Also, add a gallon of water for the car, just in case you end up overheating.

If you will be traveling through mountains in the winter, carry snow chains and be prepared with extra blankets and an emergency heater. You can make your own emergency heater by removing the center of a roll of toilet paper and putting the toilet paper in a metal coffee can. Have rubbing alcohol with you. To use the heater, fill the can almost all the way up with the alcohol and light the toilet paper. This little emergency heater will keep you warm in the car until a towing service can get to you if you break down or get stuck.

Tip: When traveling, always pay attention to the mile markers as you pass them. This way, you can explain exactly where you are to a tow company should you need a tow truck.

Talking About Tow Services

Hi there, I'm Isaac Johnson. I created this site to share my experiences with local towing services. I often pick up broken down cars and have them transported to my home on a flatbed truck. During these excursions, I talk with the tow truck drivers about their equipment and services. I would like to share information about the different types of tow trucks used to move disabled vehicles from place to place. I also want to talk about the techniques used to hook up and transport the car. Please visit my site anytime to discuss this topic in more detail. Thank you for visiting my website.
